OCCITAN ITINERARIES IN MAIRA VALLEY
THESE ARE LONG WALKS, IN THE MIDST OF NATURE, CHARACTERISED BY MEDIUM DIFFICULTY, ON TERRAIN THAT IS NOT TOO ROUGH: TREKKING.
From Dronero to S. Anna di Roccabruna - interesting site from a naturalistic point of view for the famous Parco dei Ciciu di Villar. Starting from the park, you first reach the Sanctuary of S. Costanzo al Monte and then Borgata Castello. Continuing to climb, you cross a dense wood and arrive at S.Anna di Roccabruna (6h walk).
From S. Anna di Roccabruna to Camoglieres, Macra - passing through chestnut groves and numerous hamlets, we arrive at Pagliero, where the beautiful church of S. Antonio is worth a visit, with its famous sculptures by the Zabreri brothers, dating back to the 15th century. Continue to Borgata Fracchie and after an hour's walk you will reach Grage Rubbio, in the mountains, with a view of Mount Rubbio. Passing through a Scots pine forest, you arrive at the S. Bernardo chapel and then at Camoglieres (5.45 h walk).
From Camoglieres to Morinesio - start out along the Sentiero dei Ciclamini (Cyclamen Path) that leads to Langra and then to the hamlets of Centenero, Caudano, Cucchiales inferiore, passing by the Lazzaretto di Caudano dating back to 1463 and once used as a hospital, and the splendid 13th century church of S. Peyre. From Cucchiales it is a short walk to Morinesio (4.30 h).
From Morinesio to Elva - Go up towards Colle Bettone and you will reach Colle S.Giovanni where you can admire the famous sights: the circular chapel and the 'fremo curcunà ', a particular overhanging rock, an ideal place to take panoramic photos. Then continue along the old mule track and reach the Serre village to admire the Parish Church of S.Maria Assunta with its precious frescoes, the work of the painter Hans Clemer, dating back to the period between the 15th and 16th centuries (3h30 walk).
From Elva to S. Michele di Prazzo - the continuous ups and downs characterise this stage, touching on the villages of Dao, Molino and Chiosso, following the wide mule track and reaching the Colle di San Michele. Following an easy path halfway up the hillside, the trail descends into the San Michele valley to the Chiesa hamlet (3h walk).
From S. Michele di Prazzo to Borgo Frere, Acceglio - climb the mountain ridge towards Grange Prier, cross the Comba del Duc and descend towards Grange Albeno to reach the Vallone hamlet until you reach Ussolo, the village where the film 'Il vento fa il suo giro' was filmed. From Ussolo, after 6 km you reach Borgo Frere (5h30 walk).
From Borgo Frere to Chiappera - walk towards Combata and Lausetto to continue along the path that passes above the villages Ponte Maira and Saretto or from the hotel follow for Borgo Villa, cross Ponte Maira and Saretto and then reach the destination of Chiappera (2h30-3h walk).
From Chiappera to Chialvetta - descending towards Saretto, you reach the Maira springs and from here continue to Colle di Ciarbonet. Crossing pastures, follow the mule track that leads to the Arpet rock, then descend towards the hamlet of Viviere and continue until you reach Chialvetta (4 hr walk).
From Chialvetta to Gardetta - from here you reach the Resplendino grange and continuing in the pastureland basin, you come across the fortified posts from the Second World War. Then continue to climb, crossing the Colle della Gardetta from where the small barracks are already visible (3h walk).
From Gardetta to Marmora - this is the most difficult and spectacular stage at the same time. Descend near the Colle del Preit, following the wide mule track that leaves the beautiful Rossa la Meja mountain group on the left. Then you reach Colle del Mulo, continue along the road that leads to Gias del Ghetto and then descend into the Vallone di Marmora. It passes by Lake Resile and crosses the villages of Torello and Arata to reach Vernetti (5h walk).
From Marmora to Celle Macra - climb up to Colle dell' Encucetta from where a path climbs up to Palent. Passing through fields of medicinal herbs, the trail reaches the Colletto hamlet and the old church of Albaretto before continuing on to the Combe hamlet. The trail then crosses the bridge over the Tibert bedale and after Paschero reaches the hamlet of Chiesa, where the beautiful parish church contains a valuable polyptych by Hans Clemer.
From Celle Macra to Dronero - from the Chiesa hamlet you reach Castellaro and then continue to Soglio Soprano and Serre di Paglieres. Pass through Filoira and Bedale to reach the Santa Margherita pass. From here you continue to Falcone, arriving at Cartignano, Ponte Bedale and Tetti and then you are enchanted by the beauty of the town of Dronero (6h walk).
